Moviemaking has never been more accessible than it is today. The bad news? With Today's inexpensive digital cameras and editing systems almost anyone can make a movie! With the flood of movie production that has and will result, it is getting harder and harder for today's young filmmakers to get their picture seen, let alone seriously considered. More and more movies are being made, but these are being made at a commercial level. By that I mean that almost every major cable outlet is producing pictures with the intention of bringing people into their web of influence. HBO, The Hallmark Channel, Showtime. They all produce pictures using their own producers. Ultimately this is a job market for today's young movie maker. But until he or she actually gets someone to sit down to watch the picture there is little chance that the picture will be seen on any of these services! If yours is not a know name, getting your work even seen at a major film festival can be a very daunting task. The com- petition is fiercer than ever. I doubt if some of the many disks submitted for viewing are even viewed. The vast number of entries submitted to film festivals these days is daunting . Everywhere one hears the story of worthy productions, presented on digital that go begging for a distributor. The specter of unrecovered budgets seriously hampers the fundraising efforts of the young promising filmmaker. That's the reason you must go the final step when you have finished your movie. Be prepared to present your picture yourself. Please notice I used the word "present" not just "show". I make this distinction because too often I have been requested to go on the website to view the show. This sounds lie a great idea, but it has a great deal of hazards. When you request a person to go to your website, you have taken the presentation out of your hands. You have no idea what type of equipment the viewer will be using. Your picture, seen on an unbalanced monitor may completely destroy the ambiance you intended for your picture. You also have no idea if you will get their undivided attention. Right in the middle of your climax a phone may ring or the dryer goes off. The great climax is ruined forever. And remember this truth:. for the person watching your movie, what they see will color their opinion of that movie for years to come. As far as they are concerned what they saw was your movie. And based on what they saw, that will be the movie. To prove the point: An independent filmmaker told me that Hitchcock's movie "Vertigo" had finally overcome "Citizen Kane" to the topSpot on a "ten best list." In his opinion Hitchcock had finally made it. "Vertigo " is currently being presented in the Imax Theaters where it has been given a great presentation. Currently Wells "Citizen Kane" is being show only on DVD! The presentation methods are hardly equal! So when your picture is ready, assemble your audience. Get it on the best screen you can present it on! Give it the best chance. It deserves it! After all, you made it! Copyright © 2014 by Robert Caspari
