drumming with shamans in Siberia. "Music and drumming is my path," Barbara told me in an inter-
view, "one of our goals was to open people's hearts; another was to inspire.....I wanted people to
walk out of the theatre saying they wanted to march to the beat of their own drum."
After the movie - one of the most enjoyable I'd seen in years - Barbara appeared on stage to give a
virtuoso performance on a djembe (an African drum) which had the audience dancing in the aisles of
The Rafael. Now that I've never seen before after a screening!
'Keeper' was directed by three-time Emmy award winning veteran Bay Area filmmaker David L.
Brown, an instructor in documentary filmmaking at City College in San Francisco. In his 40 year
career as a documentary filmmaker, David has accrued over 100 awards. His movie 'Surfing for Life'
is often described as the best surfing movie ever made.
RBG
Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Supreme Court judge, has been instrumental in fighting for the rights of the
individual, always maintaining her mother's teaching not to get angry. Often funny, this movie docu-
ments the whole of her life, through childhood, law school, and finally to the Supreme Court. She
took the Civil Rights spirit of the sixties, and made it law. Upholding Constitutional protections for all,
she challenged prejudices with facts, not anger. The documentary presents RBG as a lifelong fighter
for social justice, astounding us with her energy and indomitable spirit.
She quotes Sarah Grimke, who in 1837 said: "I ask no favors for my sex. I surrender not our claim to
equality. All I ask of our brethren is that they will take their feet from off our necks, and permit us to
stand upright on that ground which God designed us to occupy." RBG has done a very great deal to
make that a reality.
cineSOURCE
Take a look at cineSOURCE if you are in the greater San Francisco area - and even if you aren't.
Created by Doniphan Blair, this online source of movies and film festivals has just had it's tenth birth-
day, and it scores 45,000 views per month.
For perceptive movie reviews and lots more, check it out.
My short article 'Keeper of the Beat' is distilled from the (much longer) one I wrote for cineSOURCE
in 2013, so if you like 'Keeper of the Beat' you've got two reasons to check out cineSOURCE.
