22 D u c l o s L e n s e s d e - c l i c k Z e i s s Z F / Z F . 2 Duclos Lenses can de-click the original Zeiss ZF and current ZF.2 lenses - and most other still cam- eras lenses with click stops, often at half stop intervals, like the Zeiss lenses. Click stops on lenses are for stills shooting: on film or video, they don't give easy transitions of iris opening and closing required by changing light conditions, and good sturdy clicks, like you find on the sturdy German-engineered Zeiss lenses, may be picked up by a good microphone. 'De-clicking' the iris (diaphragm) ring on these Nikon mount Zeiss lenses so that the iris ring rotates smoothly with no stops, from widest to smallest aperture, is like having a brand new lens. Lots of camera repairers can do this, but I'll trust mechanical work on my lenses to Duclos Lenses. They've done literally thousands of de-click operations on these Zeiss lenses. Phil Bloom, Vincent Laforet and Shane Hurlbut all prefer de-clicked lenses to factory stock, as will any cinematographer, I'm sure. Duclos Lenses will have a booth a Cine Gear Expo in LA in June, but not at NAB. Stop by the In- Sync booth (C - for Central Hall - 11431) and I'll be happy to show you one, and you can see how you like it. It's the new Zeiss ZF.2, also fitted with industry-standard ring gear for mating with follow- focus units - another piece of Duclos engineering to aid the serious cinematographer or camera operator. Stop Press! While talking with Matthew at Duclos Lenses, I mentioned 'Need for Speed.' Matthew said that his company modified the lenses Canon supplied for Shane Hurlbut, ASC, the 'Need for Speed' cine- matographer to their Multi Mount. This then enables the lenses to be used on Canon EF mount cam- eras, or Nikon, Panavision, or regular PL (movie industry standard) mount cameras - and all in a matter of moments, on set, no need for a camera or lens mechanic. Pretty neat, huh? Shane was on set when he got my request for a comment on the Duclos Multi Mount: "The Duclos lens mods(whatever they are called) were essential in embedding our audience on Need for Speed. I was using a selection of EF and PL mount C500's rigged to the super cars and this unique ability of converting the lens mounts on set gave us the total flexibility to roll out with only one Canon zoom lens set. Saving money saving time. Rock solid. Sent from my iPhone. Shane. And there you have it! Look for Duclos Lenses at Cine Gear Expo, and we'll have an article in our next (June) issue of In- Sync about the fascinating things Duclos do with lenses, like converting still camera lenses to moviemaking use, de-clicking, adding focus and iris ring gears. I'll have five of my own Zeiss ZF lenses de-clicked by then, and maybe fitted with the other goodies! We'll see.
